Easy ways to 'fall proof' your home environment

Updated: Mar 19

Making your home safer is really important, and there are several simple changes you can make to reduce the risk of falls. Here are some easy ways to fall-proof your house:

  1. Remove Trip Hazards:

    • Clear clutter from walkways, hallways, and stairs.

    • Secure loose rugs or remove them altogether (consider non-slip rugs if needed).

    • Keep cords and cables tucked away or out of pathways.

  2. Improve Lighting:

    • Ensure rooms are well-lit, especially hallways and staircases.

    • Use nightlights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways.

    • Consider motion-sensor lights to make navigation easier at night.

  3. Install Grab Bars/Rails:

    • In the bathroom, add grab rails near the toilet, in the shower or tub, and along any steps.

    • You can also install grab bars in hallways if needed for extra support.

    • An occupational therapist can assist you with these.

  4. Use Non-Slip Mats:

    • Place non-slip mats in the bathtub, shower, and kitchen.

    • Consider non-slip shoes as well, especially for walking around the house.

  5. Handrails and Stair Safety:

    • Install sturdy handrails on both sides of stairways and ensure they’re secure.

    • Keep stairs well-lit and check for loose treads or steps.

  6. Rearrange Furniture:

    • Ensure that furniture is arranged so there’s enough space to walk easily.

    • Avoid sharp-edged furniture or cover it with corner protectors.

  7. Ensure Easy Access to Essential Items:

    • Keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid the need for climbing or stretching.

    • Consider lower shelving, or use grabbers to avoid unnecessary bending.

  8. Increase Bathroom Safety:

    • Consider a raised toilet seat to make sitting and standing easier.

    • Use a shower chair if standing in the shower is difficult.

  9. Use Proper Footwear:

    • Encourage wearing shoes with good support and non-slip soles around the house.

    • Avoid slippers that are too loose or slippery.

    • Footwear with a backing on them are always a better choice, they cant slip off the feet while walking and create a hazard.

  10. Check for Mobility Aids:

    • Ensure walkers, canes, or wheelchairs are in good condition and provide the right support.

    • Place furniture in a way that aids stability and movement.
